An important factor to be taken care of in all gas plants starting from its designing, construction, processing, producing, supplying and distribution is the safety factor. Maintaining a high level of safety in the plant area and also the application area is a hard and fast rule and involves fostering a pro-safety attitude, understanding potential hazards, utilizing good procedures and practices so that any hazardous situation can be easily avoided or any emergency situations can be handled quickly and effectively. It is a known fact that all types of gases with their inherent physical and chemical properties can lead to various unforeseen situations and hazards in most industrial, manufacturing, storing and material delivery operations. Hence all employees, customers and contractors working with industrial gases must be fully aware of the hazards associated with these gases.
What is Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
A document containing information on the potential hazards (fire, health, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with the chemical product is known as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). For the development of a complete safety program, an MSDS is the starting point. Expecially for gas plants, the information on the use, handling, storage and emergency procedures related to the hazards of the various gases is very important. The MSDS contains all information about the product (in this cases different gases), its hazards, how to use the product safely, how to handle un-called for accidents, how to recognize symptoms of overexposure and so on.

The exact format of an MSDS can vary from product to product, from source to source. There are at least nine categories of information present on an MSDS of gases. These are as follows:
  • Product Information
  • Hazardous Ingredients
  • Physical Data
  • Fire Hazard Data
  • Reactivity Data
  • Toxicological Properties
  • Preventive Measures
  • First Aid Measures
  • Preparation Information

Special Hazards and Cautions Relevant to Industrial Gases

  • The potential to create oxygen-rich atmosphere
  • The potential to create oxygen-deficient atmosphere.
  • There is the need to maintain control over cylinders, hoses, and other equipment
  • It is necessary to protect critical equipment from damage
  • It is necessary to replace equipment that may become damaged
  • There is the need to respect cautions and mechanical safeguards present in many components
  • It is better to know the effect of intense cold on ordinary materials.
  • Always use appropriate personal protective wear to avoid damage to unprotected flesh exposed to cryogenic temperatures.
MSDS of Different Gases
We give below the material safety data sheets of various gases:
